Developing a common scientific language and understanding between Norway and Russia

Experience gained from petroleum activities in the North Sea has led to the development of a common scientific language and understanding between European countries to deal with the offshore environmental issues. This helped to harmonize environmental guidelines and policy (i.e. OSPAR). To address the cross-border challenges created by increasing oil and gas activities in the Barents Sea, we have established a collaboration between Akvaplan-niva (Tromsø) and two Russians Academic institutions, the Institute of Biology in Karelia (IBK) and the Knipovich Polar Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (PINRO) and are working to develop a common language and understanding of petroleum-related environmental issues in the Barents Sea. Core activities in this collaboration are to exchange scientific information on current respective research activities, on environmental guidelines and policy and remediation measure to combat accidental oil spill.
