Combined ecological and ecotoxicological studies of the ice edge ecosystem

Ice-covered waters of the Arctic are populated by a large variety and abundance of amphipods making this group potentially valuable for monitoring biological effects of pollution. Yet data on the potential impacts of crude oil on this sentinel arctic species is first needed to support environmental risk and impact assessments. We focus our efforts on the reproduction cycle (adults, embryos and larvae) and the detection of effects from the biochemical level, up to cellular and physiological levels. Aspects of the species’ ability to recover from oil spills are also under investigation.
