Monitoring of disposal sites, sewage outlets and harboursAkvaplan-niva provides monitoring programs for recipient waters for discharges of sewage, runoff from refuse dumps, tunnel drains, etc. These monitoring programs may include analysis of hard and soft bottom organisms, heavy metals and organic compounds in sediment and biota, bacterial levels and changes in the intertidal floral and faunal communities. In harbour areas there are often high levels of contaminants in sediments and biota. These can originate form discharges from harbour activities and/or leaching from discontinued or existing refuse disposal sites. The sedimentation of these contaminants and disturbance of benthos communities in these areas is often strongly influenced by sewage discharges in the same area. Akvaplan-niva carries out harbour baseline and monitoring studies. These can be used to document the general environmental status of the area, to plan cleanup actions, to provide advice on safe consumptions levels for locally caught sea food, and to provide background information for municipal sewage planning.
