Analytical services

Akvaplan-niva and its subcontractors (Unilab Analyse and NIVA) offer a wide range of analytical services.  The laboratories have established quality assurance according to ISO 9001 standards and are accredited for many of the chemical and biological analyses offered. (More details on accredited services.)

Sampling

Akvaplan-niva conducts accredited sampling of soft bottom fauna and sediments around offshore installations, in coastal waters, fjords and harbours and of hard bottom fauna in the tidal zone. We also carry out sampling fr soil quality analyses on waste disposal sites, industrial areas, etc.

Faunal analysis

Akvaplan-niva's benthos laboratory provides fast and accurate species identification and evaluations of marine and freshwater benthos from the North Atlantic and Arctic regions (hard bottom, soft bottom and littoral zone). Through active taxonomic research and extensive contacts with leading scientists in Scandinavia and Russia, our knowledge of benthic fauna is continually updated and refined. The benthos laboratory is internationally accredited according to EN-45001 and participates in national ring tests for taxonomy. We also provide taxonomic analyses of marine and freshwater algae and plankton.

Chemical and sediment particle size analyses

In cooperation with subsidiary company Unilab Analyse we offer chemical analyses of hydrocarbons, PCB's, heavy metals in sediments, biota and water. Unilab Analyse also provides characterization of oil spills, analysis of lipids and free fatty acids, and organochlorines, including PCB cogeners. Analysis of heavy metals, nutrients, dioxins and sediment grain size are offered though the laboratories of collaborating companies.

Environmental statistics

Professional statisticians at Akvaplan-niva carry out univariate and multivariate analyses of biological and environmental data. Standard methods include ANOVA, ANCOVA, principle component, correspondence, factor and regression analyses. Possible relationships between environmental parameters and biota are examined by our professionals using canonical methods. A large variety of statistical packages and tools are available in the company.
